Whats left from Wards?
In this blog I'll be showing you the remnants that the Montgomery Ward department store chain has left behind.

100 Burrell Plz, Lower Burrell, PA 15068 |

2260 Valley Ave, Winchester, VA 22601 |
Wards logos and the "MW" symbol as seen on the doors. |
The store itself might still be abandoned and vacant but at leas the former auto center was reused. |
Side entrance with Wards logos. |
The plaza, to this day, is still known as "Ward Plaza" |
4314 Milan Rd, Sandusky, OH 44870
Unlike the previous locations, this Montgomery Ward store closed in the 80's. The building was later taken over by Sears.
The only reason why I bring this up is because when Sears re-used Wards auto center, they didn't change any of the original exterior signage. |
Sears closed this location in 2016 and the building has since been converted into a Hobby Lobby. |
658 Baltimore Pike, Bel Air, MD 21014 |
Another location that was taken over by Sears (they acquired several locations from Wards when they went bust back in 2001) Believe it or not, the exterior design is completely original from Wards. This was a newer style that they started using when they rebranded themselves from "Montgomery Ward" to "Wards"
The Wards auto center however, wasn't taken over by Sears auto center. It was sold to Hecht's (Who had a store in the same mall as Wards). Hecht's would later open a furniture store in the spot. When Hecht's was acquired by Macy's, the furniture store went through the same fate as the actual Hecht's department store, a rebrand as Macy's. |
Looking to the right of the building you can see... a possible "auto center" labelscar? It might be, I don't know, I cant really make out what it says. |
The Montgomery Ward had its own dedicated road sign, which, of course, was later used by Sears. The sign frame has the original Wards "Y" shape to it (which can also be seen with the first location on this list). Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, why does the Sears logo have 2 lines underneath it? I never seen that with any other Sears sign.

I included this one only to show the later Montgomery Ward building design which was seen with the previous entry on the list.

5500 Grossmont Center Dr, La Mesa, CA 91942
Here's another newer Wards location which was later a Walmart.
14665 Roscoe Blvd, Panorama City, CA 91402 |
Unlike all of the other locations on this list (except for the Winchester, VA location) this location is still abandoned.
For some reason, the entire front of the building was painted white. The side of the building (as seen in the first photo) wasn't repainted. Just the front of the building. They didn't even take down any of the Montgomery Ward signs, they just painted right over them for some reason. |

This sign, which is currently being used to advertise land redevelopment (?) used to be the Montgomery Ward sign. |
