Borger Plaza, Borger, TX
Welcome to Plazas, a new series on my blogger. Your familiar with the concept of a "dead mall" correct? Well, what about a "dead plaza"? That's what this series is all about.
In this post, we're taking a look at the former Borger Plaza in Borger, TX, A plaza that has been abandoned for too long
JCPenney was also in the plaza as well, they originally opened here in 1980. |
Looking at the plaza in 2013 (and even in 2009), everything looks exactly the same, with the exception of JCPenney, which was still open at the time. They somehow lasted here until 2017. I'd have to assume that up until that point, they were the only operating business there.

I have no idea what that building on the left was. |
The two buildings on the right however were Pro Step (a local place I guess) and Payless Shoe Source (which closed before the entire company went out of business in 2019) |
Kmart was the main anchor of the Borger Plaza, opening in 1979 |
With how vivid that labelscar is, you would think that the store would've closed recently, but no. Kmart closed their store here in 2002. It's still there to this very day. |
The plaza has some outparcels as well
The first one being this bank, with is somehow still open
This building originally started out as a Bonanza restaurant before becoming a credit union. |
I don't know what this was |
This (clearly) was a former Long John Silver's |
Behind Long John Silver's and across from Kmart is another small row of stores |

I think this was another bank |
A once prominent shopping plaza with Revco, JCPenney, and Kmart, all gone, and abandoned.

All images are from Google Maps / Google Street View. I take zero credit for any of these photos
The store with the Block Lettering was C. R. Anthony. The green building was Mr. Gatti's Pizza. Revco left Texas in the early to mid 80's. They just didn't bother to take the sign down. The far left store indeed looks like a supermarket; for that area I'd suspect if it was a chain it could be United, but I do not know for sure. The other large unknown could be Beall's (TX).
