Whats left from Woolco?
In this blog I'll be showing former Woolco stores that still have remnants of Woolco.
Judging by the buildings exterior this Woolco became a Walmart, which either closed or moved. Walmart, believe it or not, acquired several Woolco locations in the U.S., 10+ years before the Woolco Canada acquisition was even considered.
The front facade is left over from Walmart but the grooves on the sides are original from Woolco. Those grooves were common on old Woolco locations.
Home Depot entrance |
Woolco's original entrance (as you can see) is still completely intact. It's being used as The Home Depot exit. |
59 University Dr, Christiana, DE 19702 There's not much to see with this one. Burlington modified the building, mainly the entrance, but this store does still retain it's original over hanger which has been seen on every Woolco location on this list so far. |
I highly doubt this Woolco is still abandoned especially considering Woolco closed all of their U.S. stores in 1983. However, The entire original Woolco building is still in tact.
After some further research it turns out at that, while this store was built as Woolco, they never never opened, Woolco never moved in to the space.
So far all of the Woolco stores on this list have the building style that was commonly used in the 70's. Some time between the 80's and 90's Woolco changed it's building design. The most well known thing about the new building designs is (what I'll call) the "Fins"
13982 W Main St Larose, LA 70373 When this Woolco closed it became a Kmart. You can still faintly see the Big Kmart labelscar. Even though the store became was a Kmart the original Woolco building preserved.

This Woolco has some history behind it. The building originally started out as Woolco. When Woolco closed it became a Hills discount store, than Ames, later Steve & Barry's, and now Family Farm & Home. 5 different retailers were in this same building and after all of that most of the original Woolco architecture (including the grooves on the sides on the building) are still intact |
